Blending Study, Research, and Outreach

Environmental studies and environmental policy are interdisciplinary programs with an overall mission to advance understanding and awareness of humans’ role in and interaction with the natural environment through research and teaching. Our degree programs develop students’ knowledge and skills through problem-based research projects, experiential learning opportunities, and an engaging and rigorous classroom environment.

Students and staff conduct research in areas as varied as communications, earth science, economics, policy, and geo-environmental engineering. Internships and hands-on learning opportunities provide a context for understanding the relevance of scientific and societal research on the environment. Students in our programs do environmental fieldwork and data collection that make natural and social science research relevant to social and political outcomes that advance environmental protection.
