Jessica Hurtado ‘27 is pursuing global studies and political science majors and minors in economics and Spanish. With a wide range of interests, Hurtado is excited about how interdisciplinary programs lets her explore them all. “There’s a lot of leniency with which classes you're taking,” she noted, “and you get to choose a schedule that you’re interested in.”
Even when similiar themes arise in her courses, Hurtado enjoys how each class approaches topics from different perspectives, enriching her understanding with diverse perspectives. “I think students should major in global studies because it gives you a lot of new perspectives on different topics,” she said. “It’s a broad major that you could do a lot with.”
Reflecting on an alumni panel for the global studies program, Hurtado found it inspiring to see how alumni have pursued various career paths. “It’s really cool seeing how different people went on different roads,” she explained. She realized skills she's gaining as a global studies major will prepare her for a career, even if it's not directly tied to global studies. “The foundations you learn in global studies are super important.”
Hurtado is considering law school, potentially focusing on intellectual property law, but she knows she wants to work for an international company or organization—a goal her global studies major will help her achieve.
This summer, she will head to Uganda as an intern with the Iacocca Institute, marking the beginning of her experiences aboard.
