Isabelle Spirk ‘25, a double major in environmental studies and political science with a minor in Asian studies, is grateful Lehigh offers an environmental studies major apart from environmental science. Spirk loves how environmental studies allows her to focus on community and policy, areas that align closely with her other academic studies and interests.

Spirk emphasized that taking courses across a variety of disciplines has broadened her perspective. She appreciates how “the content talks to each other,” highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of her classes. She’s also received valuable mentorship from her professors, which has greatly enhanced her experience. Her advice to incoming students to utilize the faculty for recommendations and advice and to “take advantage of opportunities like lectures and events to broaden your horizons.”

Spirk also noted how meaningful it is that some of her environmental studies courses focus on the local environment of the Lehigh Valley. “It feels tangible and real,” she remarked, expressing her appreciation for studying and living in Bethlehem. Involved both on and off campus, Spirk is building connections, meeting new people, and making the most of her college experience.
